Oil paint newbie

These pieces are the first time I used oil paints. They are so different compared to acrylic which is what I usually use. Due to this I really wanted to explore their versatility, and how I could use them to progress my work. As I experimented I was increasingly aware of how I could produce depth and extremely flat plains of colour. Some of these paintings also contain wax, which worked really well in creating texture. Making the pieces in to relief artworks, looking back I could have developed this 3D element a lot further, possible creating a 3D representation of the original paintings. Since this initial dabble with oil paints I have not re-visited them, depending on where my practice develops over the summer I may try to include oil paints back into my work.

Sorry its been a while.

I realise I haven't updated this is a while now. It's been a bit crazy with uni deadlines along with naval commitments but I am glad to say that I got all my work handed in on time, this year I averaged 71% which is a first!! I am over the moon about that. Over the past few days I have sorted my room out, which includes the 4 A1 art folders I was keeping under my desk. I found all the work I produced last year on my foundation year. Even though I didn't particularly enjoy it looking back I did produce some interesting work especially when I used oil paints for the first time. I took photos of all my favorite pieces and am going to start up loading them on my next post. And just to impress you all here is a photo if my tidy room!! Ps it doesn't often look like this.

Yesterdays work

In my new studio this morning, no one else is in so I have this huge room to myself! I did these drawings yesterday based on drawings from my movement sketchbook which is full of drawings based on movement, your surroundings and sound. They are drawn on tracing paper which I painted last week, giving each drawing a unique backdrop. They look best with light from behind, shining through them. When I display them properly I will use double sided tape which will hardly notice compared to the masking they are currently stuck up with.
Today I am planning todo some more colour painting, if I finish them I will upload some photos, otherwise they should be up tomorrow!

Painting - colour and line

At the start of this year I did a colour and line project. It was very interesting to recap colour theory and the project enabled me to experiment with how colours interact, particular complimentary colours. Recently I have gone back to this project as I enjoyed it so much and I felt the work had far more mileage. As you can see I have gone from just one colour range per canvas to multiple colour groups. As this work has continued to develop I have realised I am very interested in how colour combinations can create a visual texture. I am really looking forward to working in the project through the summer.

Last year

This is my favorite piece from last year that I found in my old portfolio. A self portrait drawn onto painted fabric. This project was a real challenge as I am not confident with portrait drawing but I am still very happy with the final outcomes I produced.
